Bhuti Johannes Mkhonza has been described by those who knew him as a caring, visionary leader with a strong, positive personality. A prominent figure in the taxi industry, he was known as a taxi boss—some even referred to him as a “mafia boss.” Mkhonza was widely feared across the country, especially in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, due to his powerful influence in the industry.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) recently announced the passing of this respected leader. Given the dangerous nature of the taxi business in South Africa, Mkhonza’s leadership helped maintain stability and mitigate violence within the sector.
May his soul rest in peace. SANTACO has emphasized Mkhonza’s visionary leadership, mentorship, and selflessness, which have left an indelible mark on the taxi industry and beyond.
A former colleague shared that Mkhonza was rushed to one of the best private hospitals, but unfortunately, he could not be saved. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and details about what transpired are still unknown.
A memorial service was held today (Thursday) at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, where many of Mkhonza’s family, friends, and former colleagues gathered to celebrate his life and legacy.
An Ivory Park (Tembisa) resident, who knew Mkhonza personally, spoke to Mzansi-News after his passing. “He was a good man—caring, visionary, and strict,” the resident shared. “Mkhonza created many opportunities for others and sponsored numerous small businesses.”
May his soul rest in peace, said Mzansi-News in a tribute.
