South African Kwaito music icon, Victor Bogopane, famously known by his stage name Doc Shebeleza, has passed away at the age of 51 after a long battle with illness. The beloved star, who was a prominent figure in the 90s and 2000s music scene, had been in and out of the hospital since last year. Despite undergoing a successful surgery in 2023, he was scheduled for a second procedure this year. Sadly, he passed away before he could undergo the surgery.
Doc Shebeleza made a lasting impact on the South African music industry with his unique voice and contributions to Kwaito music, a genre that gained massive popularity in the late 20th century. His songs, including timeless tracks like Prayers Groove, Ebumnandini, Ghets Ghetsa, and many others, became anthems of the era, shaping the soundtrack of an entire generation.
In recent years, Doc Shebeleza was also brought back into the spotlight after being featured in the popular song Doc Shebeleza by South African rapper Cassper Nyovest. This collaboration reintroduced him to younger audiences and reminded fans of the immense talent that defined the early days of Kwaito.
Fans, friends, and the music community have expressed their sadness at the loss of the legend, with many taking to social media to honor his memory and legacy. “You will be missed, and your songs will continue to echo in our hearts and ears forever,” wrote one fan on Twitter.
Rest in peace, Victor Bogopane, aka Doc Shebeleza. Your music and influence will never be forgotten.
