General Mkhwanazi Secured for Five More Years

In a major win for provincial stability, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has officially confirmed the reappointment of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal for another five-year term.

The announcement, made just days before Mkhwanazi’s current contract was set to expire on March 31, follows months of public and political pressure to retain the man many credit with “cleaning up” the province.

The “No-Nonsense” Mandate

Mkhwanazi, who has gained a cult following for his blunt, hands-on approach to crime, was recently named the 2025 Newsmaker of the Year. His reappointment was a key priority for KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, who formally endorsed the General earlier this year after high-level meetings with SAPS national leadership.

“From my side, on behalf of the people of KwaZulu-Natal, we are happy with the work that he is doing,” Premier Ntuli said in a statement. “I had no doubt in giving a ‘yes’ for Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to continue.”

A Tenure of Controversy and Courage

While Mkhwanazi’s operational success is widely lauded, his recent term has been marked by explosive political drama. In July 2025, Mkhwanazi “blew the lid” on alleged high-level corruption and political interference within the SAPS, leading to:

  • The establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
  • A separate Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee to investigate criminal infiltration within law enforcement.
  • The suspension of former Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Despite these national headlines, General Masemola clarified that Mkhwanazi’s immediate focus will remain provincial. “We are in the process of finalizing the modalities. So yes, he will still be Provincial Commissioner of KZN,” Masemola confirmed.

What’s Next for the KZN Top Cop?

With his tenure now extended to 2031, Mkhwanazi faces a daunting to-do list:

  1. Extortion Syndicates: Continuing the war against “construction mafias” and business forums.
  2. Political Killings: Stabilizing the volatile KZN political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
  3. Internal Purge: Overseeing the removal of “rotten apples” he identified during his whistleblowing testimony.

The South African Policing Union (SAPU) has welcomed the decision, citing Mkhwanazi’s experience and specialized task force background as “essential” for the province’s future.
